Photographing waves underwater is a truly magical experience. The way the light dances through the water, illuminating the intricate details of each wave as it crashes and tumbles are simply breathtaking. Underwater vortex waves, and vortex explosions, are circular currents of water that rotate just as the wave is ready to break.

I was lucky enough to be in the right spot under a 7-8ft wave to capture this side image of the breaking tide. The force of the vortex pushed down on my body as I was trying to capture this image.
