After days of scouting for new angles of the Olgas, I mapped out this composition with the Desert Oaks. Kata Tjuṯa, also known as the Olgas, is a group of large, ancient rock formations located in the Red Centre of Australia, in the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. The name Kata Tjuṯa means "many heads" in the local Pitjantjatjara language, and the site is of great cultural and spiritual significance to the Anangu people, the traditional custodians of the land. Kata Tjuṯa is made up of 36 steep-sided domes that rise up to 546 meters above the surrounding desert landscape. The rock formations are composed of conglomerate, a sedimentary rock made up of pebbles and boulders cemented together by sand and mud. I waited several days before I got the colour I wanted on Twilight, I captured this unique panorama deep in the Kata Tjuta scrub country. Photographed in 6 x 17 Super Roll Film on Fuji Velvia 100. With the cold winter's desert temperature dropping to only 6 degrees, I held the exposure on twilight for 1 minute and then double exposed a second time for greater colour depth. Uluru is approximately 3.6 kilometers long and stands 348 meters above the surrounding desert. It is known for its changing colors at different times of the day, with shades of red, orange, and purple appearing during sunrise and sunset. The Anangu people have lived in the area for tens of thousands of years and have a deep spiritual connection to the land and the surrounding rock formations. Visitors to Uluru are asked to respect the cultural significance of the area and are encouraged to learn about the traditions and beliefs of the Anangu people. This compelling image of Uluru was taken on a cold but very sunny winter's morning just after sunrise. With the Lihof camera setup on the tripod, I manage to capture this epic shot of the sun blemished behind the early morning cloud cover. the rays of light sun drenching Uluru and the Red Rock. During a desert storm, the landscape in the Kata Tjuta National Park can be transformed in a matter of minutes, with dust and sand covering everything in its path. The towering rock formations of Kata Tjuta can provide some shelter from the wind and sand, but even these ancient rocks can be eroded over time by the abrasive forces of the storm. This image I captured late afternoon of a rare Dust Storm that swept over the Olgas. I captured this using a 2 Stop Graduated Filter to add definition to the sky and balance the harsh desert foreground. I was lucky enough, to capture this rare sighting. With the hot midday sun, I was able to capture these wind ripples on the desert sand that made their way to form this pattern. Captured on 6 x 17 Fuji Velvia Wind-swept sand dunes are a type of sand dune that is formed by wind-blowing sand grains over the crest of a dune, causing the sand to cascade down the leeward slope of the dune.
